The Evolution of Telehealth – How to Prepare for an Online Visit with Your Doctor

In many parts of the United States, non-essential healthcare appointments have been restricted as a result of COVID-19. However, thanks to today’s technology, telehealth allows you to still receive high-quality medical advice and attentive care from your doctor remotely, from the comfort of your own home, at work, or any place where you have access to the internet.

Telehealth can be a convenient and effective way to access the healthcare and support you need. It can offer a number of benefits, including allowing long-distance client and clinician contact, identifying, assessing, and diagnosing certain conditions, regular monitoring of health and/or medications, advice, education, and intervention.

In order for you to get the most out of your telehealth appointment and for it to work successfully, it is important to be prepared beforehand as this will save time and reduce the chances of problems during the consultation.

How to Prepare

Avoid technology hiccups. If you are accessing virtual care via a health portal or web link, be sure you understand how to log into the system with your device prior to your consultation. Some systems may work better on tablets or mobile devices than on computers, so it is best to check when scheduling an appointment. Try to practice logging into the app at least one business day before the scheduled appointment, and if you can’t log in, call your doctor’s office for advice. Ensure you have a secure connection to the internet and try to position yourself near to your router in order to get the best connection possible while having your consultation. Remember to store your username and password (or link) in a safe place, and have it handy for the day of your appointment.

Find a quiet, private space for your consultation with minimal interruptions. Have good lighting to ensure your doctor can see you properly. If you’re using a phone or tablet instead of a PC, place it in a stable position or in a device holder or stand rather than holding it manually.

Gather any important information beforehand. When booking a virtual care consultation, check if there is any particular information your doctor requires, or whether they have any forms you need to fill out prior to your appointment. It can be useful to have everything you need at hand for the consultation, such as a list of symptoms or changes in symptoms/condition, medical history information, details of your weight, body temperature, and blood pressure, and any other relevant information/stats. Having this information will enable your doctor to deliver the best care possible, such as making a diagnosis, selecting the most appropriate treatment option, prescribing medicine, making health recommendations, or developing a comprehensive treatment plan.

Have any medications at hand. Either record a list of all your medications, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements, or gather the actual medications and place them where you’ll take the virtual visit. This is usually required at each consultation to ensure your information is up-to-date.

Write down any questions. To ensure that your telehealth appointment is productive, it is useful to prepare a list of your concerns or questions ahead of time and make sure they are at hand for your appointment. Your doctor may have questions or a set of instructions for you, too, so it may be helpful to take notes.

Discuss future care needs. Find out if you should write down your doctor’s recommendations or plan, or if they will be mailed, emailed, or be accessible via a health portal. If you’re writing it down, ensure you get clarification on any points you are unsure about. Repeating their instructions back to them ensures you have everything right and allows your doctor to correct any misunderstandings.
