Would you like to improve your mood and sense of well-being? Do you wish to manage blood glucose and blood pressure levels? If you’re diabetic, reach these health goals through eating well, taking your medications, and, very importantly–staying fit.
Let’s talk about some tips for managing diabetes and being fit and where you can find a holistic healthcare expert in Weatherford, TX.
Tip #1 Make Sure You Are Healthy Enough to Exercise.
This guideline applies to anyone who has not been exercising regularly. However, for people with diabetes, a check-up with your PCP or holistic medicine doctor is critical to your success and well-being.
High blood glucose levels pose a high health risk for people diagnosed with diabetes and pre-diabetic, i.e., individuals with slightly elevated blood glucose levels after fasting. Heart attack and stroke risks rise quickly with diabetes.
So, before starting an aerobics class, swimming, or other activity, tell your doctor so he or she can do a complete physical exam and a cardiac stress test to ensure all is well.
Tip #2 Exercise 150 Minutes Per Week.
If you’re cleared to exercise, pick a light aerobic activity you really enjoy, such as swimming, biking, or walking. Aim for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Or, you may opt for three days a week, 50 minutes a session. Whatever the case, stay with it as exercise controls glucose levels and your other vital signs and aspects of metabolic activity as well.
Tip #3 Check Your Blood Glucose Before You Exercise.
Eat a light snack if your blood sugar is less than 100. With enough fuel on board, you reduce the risk of low blood glucose and its severe side effects. Harvard Health says that hypoglycemia often happens several hours after a workout if you are insulin dependent. So, check your sugar level six hours or so post-exercise.
Tip #4 Keep Glucose Tablets or Candy Handy.
If you need a boost mid-workout:
- Take a glucose tablet or piece of hard candy.
- Stay well-hydrated.
- Be sure your exercise buddies know about your condition and how to help you if your sugars go too low.
- Always wear your medic alert bracelet or device, so you get help in an emergency.
Tip #5 Get the Diabetes Management You Need.
The holistic medicine practitioner can advise you on balancing exercise, weight control, stress, food, medications, and other lifestyle and medical aspects of diabetes control. You can live well with this chronic condition.
