Healthy Holiday Recipe Alternatives

The holidays come hand-in-hand with some of the biggest temptations, and one of those is the array of food, desserts, chocolates, and other sweet treats we enjoy throughout the season – seemingly nonstop. It’s not easy to control the amount of food we consume during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even New Year’s Eve celebrations, so perhaps it’s time to switch up some of the ingredients we use in those magnificent meals.

Fortunately, there are healthier alternatives that are just as delicious as the traditional fare. Let’s take a look at – and a taste of – a few savory options you can try when whipping up your next batch of holiday delicacies in your kitchen this holiday season.

Alternative Healthy Holiday Choices

The following are some easy, healthier, lower-calorie alternatives to replace some of your old standbys:

1.     Cauliflower Mash

A cup of your usual mashed potatoes has around 200 calories. Instead of using potato, you can try out cauliflower instead with your normal mashed-potato recipe.

The use of cauliflower reduces the calories and carbohydrates you get, plus you’re getting a healthy vegetable rather than a starchy one. Furthermore, it is also rich in fiber and B vitamins.

2.     Baked Apples

Instead of an apple pie, try serving baked apples as a healthier alternative. Skip out on the pie crust and use the whole fruit of the apple, which you can stuff with coconut oil, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Notice what that means: no butter! You won’t even miss it. Meanwhile, the addition of cinnamon contributes to lower blood sugar levels.

3.     Roasted/Braised Turkey

Thanksgiving and even Christmas are often heralded with a big turkey dinner. Many people deep-fry their turkey, but frying involves a large amount of fat and oil.

If you wish to try a healthier version this year, it’s a great idea to roast or braise the turkey instead. Roasting involves pure cooking with dry heat, and braising is to slow-cook the turkey in liquid.

4.     Greek Yogurt

Using Greek yogurt to prepare foods instead of sour cream essentially replaces fat content with protein content. Try replacing this ingredient in one of your staple dishes and see how it tastes. Chances are, you’ll love it.

5.     Shrimp Kebabs

Whereas Americans typically cook our shish kebabs with skewers full of beef alternating with peppers and onions, a lighter choice would be to replace the beef with shrimp. Try adding zucchini and squash to the mix as well for an even more mouthwatering dish.

These ingredients provide more nutrients such as potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin K. Not only is this version of the shish kebab healthier, but it also helps boost your metabolism.
